Gospel Guardian Tell-Al-Gram

Meeting Coming Up: Luther Blackmon At Emerson Avenue In Indianapolis, Indiana April 6-13.

CORRECTION ON EDITORIAL: (Regarding editorial about Lufkin, Texas churches) — The Church In Herty by D. L. Freeman - "The church in Herty began in January, 1946, with the approval and help of the elders at Fourth and Groesbeck, Lufkin. It has met, without interruption, for 23 years. D. L. Freeman preached three years and furnished the first place of worship, his home. The church saved enough money to erect a meeting house on Paul Avenue, and in November, 1948, they moved into the building. Brother W. S. Moody preached for awhile. He was followed by Cecil Willis, W. E. Brightwell, Verdell Morris, and Clyde Moore. While brother Moore was preaching, the building on Atkinson Drive was completed. Services began there in September, 1960. Lanny Parish is the present preacher. The church is sound and friendly. How many have helped it through this tough score of years — whose names are not mentioned here — whose works are kept in our hearts! Pay us a visit sometime."

AN IMPORTANT LETTER ABOUT STARVATION IN NIGERIA, AMONG BRETHREN: "As you may have known, Leslie Diestelkamp and others have been working on a way for churches to send money, scripturally, to the starving brethren in Eastern Nigeria. Last week we received word that bro. Wayne Payne and bro. George Pennock had gone into the region and delivered over $500 in food and medicine to the churches there. The money had been donated by the brethren (colored) in West Nigeria, even though they themselves are in deep poverty.

"The elders of the Highland Street church (Hammond, Indiana) determined to send relief to these starving brethren. An announcement was made at services Wednesday night that the entire collection next Sunday would be sent to these starving brethren, by our messengers, bros. Payne and Pennock. Our collection was the all-time high for Highland Street. $875 was given and has been sent to the relief of our brethren in Biafria.

"I suggested to bro. Wm. B. Murrell that we write you about it and ask if you could print something about it in the Gospel Guardian. He thought it was a good idea and gave me the job of writing you...if you think it will help other churches to make up their minds, then please put something in the Guardian about it." Jim Barnes, 604 Highland St., Hammond, Ind. 46320.

TWO SIGNS: Richard R. Poplin of Shelbyville, Tenn. sent the Chapel Hill picture. Bob Felkner of Conroe, Texas sent the Cleveland picture. Both signs apparently represent efforts by "liberal" churches to distinguish themselves from the "antis". Felkner observes that the mistake in the Cleveland sign (James 1:26 for 1:27) "exemplifies their careless handling of scriptures." Poplin writes, of the Chapel Hill sign, "Just to the right of the sign the new church building can be seen where the brethren meet who do not support the institutions. I suppose the sign was erected near the building to keep travelers from stopping at this 'anti church." He writes further, "The sign is a little confusing though. It would seem that James 1:27 is supposed to have something to do with turning at the post office. But I suppose those 'in the know' about the 'issues would get the message. The implication would be that the church building you can reach by turning right at the post office. is the meeting place of those who believe in James 1:27; but the other who meet in the new building don't believe in James 1:27. It sort of reminds me of a sign I saw in the San Joaquin Valley in California a few years ago. The sign had the words Church of Christ and a picture of one loaf of bread and one cup. I got the message."

CAPSULE SERMON: "Mirror" — My mirror does not reveal a very pretty picture as I peer into it. Things about me seem better than they look — hate to admit it, but there's nothing wrong with my mirror; it's perfect — must be me. Still, though, others think I'm better than this shows me to be. Course, my friends and enemies judge my looks through their personal prejudices, but not this mirror! No, Sir, it gives an honest representation. Since it's the one that describes my true self, I guess I'll have to "spruce" myself up a bit. How long has it been since your heart booked into the mirror of God's word?" — Larry Ray Hafley
