Taking A Second Look
Headlines of a Western newspaper reads: "Newcomers Get A Shellacking." And then the sports editor continues: "The Presbyterians blanked the Church of Christ — 6 to 0 — in a church league softball game yesterday evening at the Municipal Stadium; while in a nonleague game the First Baptist defeated the Dewey All-Stars on the Garfield ground--7 to 5. The First Methodists and First Christians, who were rained out Monday evening, are scheduled to play off their game this evening at 6:45 at the stadium. The scores by innings of yesterday's game: Church of Christ... 000 000 0---033. Presbyterians 201 300 X---680." Now here's a church of Christ with a ball team and in "league" with the denominations. By the looks of the scores, that church should start offering scholarships for better ball players. And since the work of the Lord's church is LIMITED to evangelism, edification, and benevolence (Eph. 4:11-16; I Tim. 5:16; I Thess. 1:8); we are wondering just how the above mentioned church classifies its work of running a ball team. Truly, some churches practice many things for which they have no scripture.
