Both Right - Both Wrong

F. Y. T.

Let this editor add a few words to what Brother Wallace has written about the current controversy between Lemmons and Oler. It is a rather interesting circumstance to note that these two men are BOTH right - and BOTH wrong. At least, that is our considered judgment. Lemmons is RIGHT in contending that "anything that can be done by the church as a work of the church should be under the elders of the church." He is WRONG in contending that such an institution as Tipton Orphan Home, a secular institution whose operation involves both commercial and agricultural practices, as well as educational, social, and recreational activities, is properly administered as a part of the work of the church. "The work of the church under the elders of the church" is right in form, but as Tipton Orphan Home operates this procedure is WRONG IN FUNCTION.

Gayle Oler, on the other hand, is eminently correct is contending that the operation and maintenance of an institution like Boles Home is no part of the church, is not a work of the church, and should exist under a Board of Directors not "under the elders." This is so obviously true as to be undeniable. Oler's position is that Boles Home is a "service institution" which sells its services to individuals, other organizations, and churches — in exactly the same way as an electric company, a hospital, or a building contractor might sell services. We believe no thinking and knowledgeable person could fault such a position.

But, Oler's position being true, Boles has no right to solicit or accept contributions from churches! So, while Oler's institution is right in form it is WRONG IN FUNCTION.

And that is what the fuss is all about. If both Lemmons and Oler will get the practice of their institutions in harmony with their teaching on the subject, peace and unity would prevail. "like the dew of Hermon, that cometh down upon the mountains of Zion."

And, mirabile dictu! both of them would find themselves instantaneously and thrilling harmony with their "anti" brethren!
