Public Debate

Jesse G. Jenkins

Jesse G. Jenkins and Mack D. Abbott have signed propositions for a six night discussion on the dates of June 3-8, 1963. The debate will be held in the meeting house of the church of Christ in Tucumcari, New Mexico, (1707 South 3rd). There will be two thirty minute speeches by each disputant each night. The nightly discussions will begin at 7:30. The propositions are as follows:

Proposition No. 1 The scriptures teach that there are three separate and distinct Persons in the Godhead; God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Ghost.

Affirmed: Jesse G. Jenkins Denied: Mack D. Abbott Proposition No. 2: The scriptures teach that, the Name of Jesus is the only Name to be used in the act of water baptism.

Affirmed: Mack D. Abbott Denied: Jesse G. Jenkins Proposition No. 3: The scriptures teach that the church of which I am a member is the true church in name, doctrine, and practice.

Affirmed: Jesse G. Jenkins Denied: Mack D. Abbott Proposition No. 4: The scriptures teach that in order to be saved you must be born again, and that the Holy Ghost is the Born again experience the same as the Apostles received with the evidence of speaking in other tongues.

Affirmed: Mack D. Abbott Denied: Jesse G. Jenkins Proposition No. 5: The use of mechanical instruments of music in connection with the songs sung in the assembly of the saints is without scriptural authority, and therefore, sinful and wrong.

Affirmed: Jesse G. Jenkins Denied: Mack D. Abbott Proposition No. 6: The scriptures teach that prayer is included in the conversion of an alien sinner.

Affirmed: Mack D. Abbott Denied: Jesse G. Jenkins Mack D. Abbott is pastor of the United Pentecostal Church that meets at 1212 N. Washington in Roswell, New Mexico. The United Pentecostal preacher in Tucumcari did not want to participate in the debate; therefore, he contacted Mr. Abbott. In July (the exact dates have not been set) I am to meet Mr. Abbott again in their building in Roswell. The above propositions have been signed for that discussion also, but with the understanding that one or more of the propositions can be changed by mutual consent.
